    Tuition payments during studies

The following information is for current students at Lund University.

Invoices for your next tuition fee instalment

Due to the requirements or the Swedish Migration Agency, students who pay tuition fees (generally all non-EU/EEA students) need to pay their first tuition fee instalment – for the first semester of studies – before they arrive at Lund University.?Thereafter, an invoice is generated and sent to you via the Student Portal in advance of each following semester of studies.

    The deadlines to pay are:

    Autumn semester studies (September–January):

    • Invoices for the first autumn semester of study?are generated and sent to you in the Student Portal during April.
    • Payment for the first autumn semester of study is due by 20 May (we strongly urge you to pay as early as possible in order to make your residence permit application during May)
    • Invoices for subsequent autumn semester studies (i.e. for your 3rd or 5th semester that takes place in autumn), invoices are generated and sent to you in the Student Portal during May
    • Payment for the subsequent autumn semester studies (3rd or 5th semesters)?is due by 1 August.

    Spring semester studies (January–June):

    • Invoices are generated and sent to you in the Student Portal during November.
    • Payment is due by 15 December.

If the payments are not?received by the deadline, you will lose your place on the programme or course to which you have been?admitted. If you need to apply for a payment extension please contact the Tuition Fee office before the deadline.

The instructions and accepted methods of payment are explained in the Student Portal. Questions can be directed to tuitionfees [at] eken [dot] lu [dot] se.

Please note that it can take a few days after your payment has been made until it is noted in LADOK and you are able to register in the Student Portal for the courses/the semester you are about to start.

Overpayment or underpayment of tuition fee invoice

Due to the fluctuation of currency exchange rates, there may be instances where a student inadvertently pays slightly more than the required tuition fee instalment or slightly less than the required tuition fee instalment.

Lund University has the following policy regarding overpayment/underpayment and the resulting refund or generation of a further invoice:

    • Where there has been an overpayment of SEK 100 or more from the invoiced tuition instalment, this difference shall be refunded to the student either as an adjustment to the next invoice for the following semester of study, or as a direct refund if there are no further semesters to be invoiced.
    • Where there has been an underpayment of SEK 100 or more from the invoiced tuition instalment, this difference shall be invoiced and must be paid by the student, either as an addition to the next invoice for the following semester of study, or as a separate invoice if there are no further semesters to be invoiced.
    • Where the underpayment or overpayment is less than SEK 100, no action will be taken.

For more information please contact tuitionfees [at] eken [dot] lu [dot] se.

Payment for extra courses if you are studying a degree programme

Degree programmes are made up of several courses, each worth a certain value of ECTS credits. In a degree programme you usually complete 30 ECTS credits per semester, or a total of 60 ECTS credits per year. Note that some degree programmes have a structure where you complete slightly more than 30 ECTS credits in one semester and slightly less than 30 ECTS credits the next semester. However the overall total of credits for the full degree programme will still be either 60 ECTS for a 1-year programme, 120 ECTS credits for a 2-year programme or 180 ECTS credits for a 3-year programme.

If you are a non-EU/EEA student and you would like to study more ECTS credits than what is required for your degree programme (for example, if you wish to take an extra elective course option than what is required, or if you wish to take a separate free-standing single subject course on offer at Lund University), then generally you will need to pay a tuition fee for these extra ECTS credits (the extra course/courses).

Extra ECTS credits (the courses) will show in your LADOK record at Lund University, which is checked each semester. If you have exceeded the number of credits required for your degree programme within a semester of studies (i.e. by more than 3 ECTS credits), an invoice will be generated and sent to you for payment via the Student Portal.

Students with a Lund University Global Scholarship or a Swedish Institute scholarship

For students who have been awarded the Lund University Global Scholarship or a Swedish Institute scholarship, the scholarship money can only be applied to the degree programme to which it was awarded. Therefore if you wish to take additional ECTS credits (i.e. another course outside of the ECTS requirements of the programme to which you are enrolled), then you will be invoiced for those extra ECTS credits.
